It’s going to be based on the book, which the original movie was mostly not. Not a sequel.
From an article on Yahoo! Entertainment:
“According to reports, Wright aims to take the story back to its roots, with the filmmaker claiming that it’ll better resemble a stand-alone film than a remake of Glaser’s original.
“I like the film but I like the book more, and they didn’t really adapt the book. Even as a teenager when I saw the Schwarzenegger film I was like, ‘Oh, this isn’t like the book at all!’” Wright told the Happy Sad Confused podcast in late 2023.
“And I think, ‘Nobody’s done that book.’ So when that came up, I was thinking, and Simon Kinberg says, ‘Do you have any interest in ‘The Running Man?’ I said, ‘You know what? I’ve often thought that that book is something crying out to be adapted.’ Now, that doesn’t mean that it’s easy! But it’s something that we are working on.”
I’m excited because the book is far better than the original film and I love Edgar Wright’s movies. I can’t wait!
I'm pumped about it too, Gary! I think it's going to be a hit for sure. I think with this project we have a Stephen King work adapted with a decent studio budget and solid actors on board so far... should make for a fun flick! Stephen King rules!
I have high hopes for it. I was always disappointed that they hadn’t made a movie using the actual story. It should be amazing!
BTW, I re-responded on your top shows of the 70s post, with an apology and an explanation. I hope you get a chance to read it. It took me three hours to write it…🤔🤓🤪
Uplinks on the ground. Uplinks underground. You guys don't shut up, I'm going to uplink your ass... you'll be on the ground!
God I love that line hahaha.
Fine I'll go rewatch this movie ...
I think they did announce Powell to play Ben Richards right? I do like him in Top Gun and Hitman. Currently going through Twisters.
He's also just different from Arnold so it could be his own variation, I don't think anyone can replace Arnold tbh. So it can't be someone super similar to Arnie.
Hahaha! So good, I forgot about that line!! 🤣🤣🤣 I've just never been able to forget the Sub Zero line (Now plain zero!) my whole life! I'm almost positive there was a better one-liner for that!
I agree with you, Glen Powell is a talented dude and can totally make this his own. Since it's going to be closer to the Stephen King book I think we can expect to see a little more emotional drama. Arny was so good in this role, and I think it's good they are going in the direction of the novel, that way we get a Ben Richards that is different than the one Arnold portrayed.
Btw. I rewatched bits and pieces of the flick to write this post, but now I'm going back to rescreen the Uplinks section LOL
😹😹😹 the plain zero one is so good too hahaha. I can quote Arnold all day. Lol love that you’re going back to the uplink ground line 😂.
Yah! If they take a different route and do it right, it can be really good. So long as they don’t pull a total recall remake where they try to replicate the original and it just wasn’t it at all.

I haven't seen Running Man in so long. Going to have to give it a rewatch now!
More a remake than a sequel then?
